Loose or uncomfortable dentures

Denture relines and fit adjustments in Cheadle.

A reline changes the surface that rests against your gums. An adjustment changes a smaller area. The right option depends on why the fit has changed and the condition of the denture.

When an assessment may help

The denture moves

It lifts, rocks or slips when you speak or eat, or you have started relying on more adhesive than before.

Comfort has changed

You notice rubbing, pressure points or repeated sore areas. Persistent pain or broken skin should be assessed rather than covered with adhesive.

Your mouth or denture has changed

Gums and supporting tissues can change over time. Wear, damage or previous dental treatment can also affect fit.

Do not file, bend, heat or add material to a denture yourself. These changes can damage it and make the fit less predictable.

Reline, adjustment or replacement?

We check the denture, how it sits and what symptoms you have before recommending a next step.

Reline

A reline may help when the denture is otherwise suitable but the fitting surface no longer follows the shape of your gums closely enough.

Adjustment

A focused adjustment may help with a specific pressure area or a bite issue. Removing too much material can make a denture worse, so this should be done professionally.

Replacement

A very worn, damaged or repeatedly repaired denture—or one that no longer works with your bite—may not be a good candidate for relining.

What to expect

  1. Assessment: bring the denture you are concerned about and explain when the change started.
  2. Options: we explain whether an adjustment, reline, repair, replacement or dental assessment is the appropriate next step.
  3. Records and fitting: if a reline is suitable, we explain the records and appointments needed before any work begins.
  4. Aftercare: follow the cleaning advice given and contact us if the denture creates a sore area or does not seat correctly.

When a dentist needs to help

Contact a dentist if soreness does not settle, an area is bleeding, you have swelling or an ulcer or lump persists, or the problem involves natural teeth or implants. Seek urgent advice for severe pain, spreading swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or a serious mouth or facial injury.
